Chasing pack snaps at Federer’s heels

by admin on November 26, 2007

World number one Roger Federer’s claims of invincibility mean nothing to Rafael Nadal and the Spaniard has vowed to hunt down his nemesis in 2008. After winning the Masters Cup in Shanghai on Sunday, the imperious Federer warned his pursuers not to even try to rule the sport while he is still around.

Nadal, soundly beaten by the Swiss in the semi-finals last week, refuses to give up in his pursuit of the top ranking, however.

“I have always tried hard and will continue to try hard,” Nadal told Reuters on Tuesday. “Sure, it is difficult to beat Federer now but if I try my best and work hard, I have a chance to beat him consistently.”

Nadal faces Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the Malaysian capital on Tuesday in a “Clash of the Titans” exhibition match as part of Malaysia’s year-long party to celebrate the country’s 50th year of independence.

Three-times French Open champion Nadal is in a rare position of leading Federer head-to-head, holding an 8-6 advantage over his rival.

However, six of those victories came on his favored clay surface and only two on hard courts.

At this year’s Masters Series in Hamburg, Nadal lost to Federer for the first time on clay.

World number eight Gasquet is also looking to unseat Federer and said the Swiss star is now ripe to be caught by a new generation of players including himself and Nadal.

“Federer is 26 and yes, he is in incredible form and appears to be unbeatable, but I don’t think he can get much better than he is now,” Gasquet told Reuters.

“I’m only 21, Nadal is also still young and players like us are going to catch up with Federer. We need to work really hard on our games but we can do it.”

Gasquet has one career victory over Federer when they met for the first time, at the 2005 Monaco tournament.

However, Federer has won their past six matches, including this year’s Wimbledon semi-final.

Federer is also set to play in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday against former world number one Pete Sampras, who is coming out of retirement for the match.

Rafa into semi-final Masters Cup

by admin on November 15, 2007

Second-ranked Rafael Nadal preserved his chances for reaching the semifinals of the Masters Cup, beating No. 3 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday in a match between two players clearly weary from a long season.No. 6 David Ferrer faced No. 8 Richard Gasquet in the final Gold Group round-robin match later Thursday, with the results determining which two players will advance to the semifinals of the season-ending tournament for the top eight men in the rankings.

Nadal, both knees taped as in recent weeks, had a little more determination not to lose. He had Djokovic, who has admitted to exhaustion from more than 100 matches this year and off-court demands on his time, in almost constant trouble.

“I am very happy about my game today,” Nadal said. “I play very, very good match, the best match here, and one of the best matches of the indoor season.

“My calendar is tough because I have to play a lot of matches in the clay season. That is a good news for me, to play a lot of matches. But sometimes is tough.”

Djokovic fended off two break points in the first game, then saw Nadal run off four straight games to take control.

Djokovic showed flashes of the skills that carried him from No. 16 in the rankings in January to five titles and No. 3 in the world. But, too often, the Serb’s shoulders were slumping as shots that would have been winners earlier in the year were just missing. He gave a bitter smile when he netted a forehand as Nadal served at 5-4 in the first set, then trudged to his chair when he sent a backhand long on set point.

Nadal got an early break in the second set and was increasingly demonstrative as the match wore on. The Spaniard, serving at 4-3, pumped his fist eight times after fending off the second of two Djokovic break points with a great backhand volley for a player not known for his net game.

Nadal smacked a forehand winner down the line on match point.

“It wasn’t my week,” Djokovic said. “I wasn’t performing the way I wanted to. Unfortunately I have to finish with the three losses, which is a bit disappointing. But, of course, I don’t want to think negative. It’s been an amazing year.

“Rest is something which is necessary for me and the most important thing in this moment. I’m going to go somewhere far, far away from everybody,” Djokovic added with a smile.
